Fifty Sent: Part glance back, part focus forward, CRS 2019 kicked off the event's 50th year during Opening Ceremonies this afternoon (2/13). Outgoing Executive Dir. Bill Mayne thanked the CRB staff – "know that it is these people who work 51 weeks a year to make this happen" – and, especially, attendees. "Without you we have absolutely no reason to be," he said. Board President Kurt Johnson added, "For the last two years I have a had a front row seat to watch a master create brilliance. Thank you, Bill."
Incoming Exec. Dir. RJ Curtis figuratively took the baton in his official introduction in the role for CRS, Stoney Creek's Jimmie Allen sang an a capella "Star Spangled Banner," and U.S. military band Six String Soldiers sang "Unsung Heroes."
"I don't believe there is a silver bullet to correct all ills," said Tom Rivers Humanitarian recipient Dollar Bill Lawson, whose many efforts have included helping raise $3 million for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at WDXB/Birmingham. Referring to the many "pellets" of good work accomplished by radio stations in all market sizes, he said, "I believe there's a silver shotgun."
