Leading Is Fundamental: Communication, courage and empathy were cited as keys to leadership by Cox's Kim Guthrie, Entercom's Weezie Kramer and Neuhoff's Beth Neuhoff during this morning's (2/15) "What Leadership Looks Like" session at CRS 2019. Discussing individual leadership styles, Guthrie said she has resisted overzealous suggestions for changes. "We love what you've done, can you just be totally different?" she joked, adding authenticity is crucial. "You have to adapt a little bit to where you work ... but I just go back to my roots." Neuhoff noted an evolution in perception. "Different leadership styles are far more acceptable than they were," she said.

Kramer touched on managing through change, citing her company's recent acquisition of CBS Radio as an example. "The only way you can build trust is face to face," she said. "It's hard to go across the entire U.S., market to market and go deep, but after a year-and-a-half, for first time it feels like one team." All three had positive views of radio's future, with Kramer pointing out, "Audio is now the hottest thing on the planet."
