Bits & Pieces: Cumulus WDRQ/Detroit on-air personality Roxanne Steele has launched a listener-backed GoFundMe campaign to assist a local homeless veteran. “We got this story about a guy in his late 30s who was looking through the garbage at [a local] Tim Horton’s ... the manager not only gave him something to eat but offered him [a] job,” shares Steele. “We want to do more to help him get back on his feet, [and] we’ve learned he’s a veteran with PTSD who just lost everything.” Hear the morning show discuss the story here; see the complete story and GoFundMe here.

As the ACM Radio Awards winners were revealed this morning (4/15), the Academy shared a pre-produced video of the honorees opening their awards. Several of the stations, however, did their own trendy “unboxing” videos with the ACM mystery boxes. Here’s how they played out:

  • Major Market Station of the Year KNIX/Phoenix had Triple Tigers’ Russell Dickerson crash a team Zoom meeting to give them the news here, while Major Market Personality of the Year Lois “Double L” Lewis was surprised with a box of her own at a Phoenix Suns game here.
  • The WQDR/Raleigh team did a more traditional unboxing for their Large Market Station of the Year win; see that here.
  • Large Market Personality of the Year recipients Lexi Papadopoulos and Jared “Banks” Danielson of KUBL/Salt Lake City’s Lexi And Banks each opened their own mystery boxes in their adjoining but-socially-distanced studios during “Mail Call” here.
  • KUZZ/Bakersfield PD Brent Michaels didn’t tell the staff they had won and, instead, opted to treat it as a fake YouTube challenge. See them find out they won Medium Market Station of the Year here.
