A Nightmare On Main Street: Concern that the economy is negatively impacting the level of country music fan engagement is proving to be well-founded, according to new research by Leo Burnett and The Right Brain Consumer Consulting conducted for the CMA. The organization's new 712-person "Prime Prospect" telephone study of adults 18-54 analyzing country's "most potentially rewarding fan base" categorizes them four ways: CountryPhiles (passionate fans), MusicPhiles (dedicated fans of Country and other genres), Today's Traditional (prospective MusicPhiles), and Pop Country (prospective MusicPhiles whose Country tastes lean pop).
The findings indicate that CountryPhiles and MusicPhiles are less likely to monetize their support for the genre than a year ago; many have become "Low-Funding Fans." Eighty percent of Prime Prospects regard today's economic conditions as "not so good" or "poor," citing no-cost music downloads as a free activity they wanted to pursue. Most Country fans go online occasionally, though not always at home, making YouTube, iTunes, and radio station sites important mass-marketing networks, specially for CountryPhiles and MusicPhiles. One encouraging sign is that the total 18-54 country fan base has grown 3% since '08 from 39.7 million to 40.9 million. Later this autumn, CMA will undertake further research to track changes since its original 2008 Consumer Segmentation Study, and present those findings at CRS-41 Feb. 25 at 11am. More details are available to CMA members here.
