Chronicle: Our condolences to the family and friends of Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member Red Lane, who died yesterday (7/1) after battling cancer. He was 76. Lane was born Hollis DeLaughter in Zona, LA and joined the Air Force after high school, becoming an airplane mechanic. Lane's love for airplanes continued throughout his life. At the time of his death he was living in Ashland City, TN in a 170-passenger Douglas DC-8 jet he converted into a house. During his last year in the service he began performing under the name Red Lane. He later toured as Justin Tubb's guitarist, wrote for Tree International, was briefly Dottie West's bandleader and a script writer for The Johnny Cash Show. Lane's early credits include Tammy Wynette's "Til I Get It Right," Waylon Jennings' "The Eagle," Dottie West's "Country Girl," BJ Thomas' "New Looks From An Old Lover" and Merle Haggard's "My Own Kind Of Hat." Haggard recorded 29 of Lane's songs. In Lane's later years, he had cuts from artists including Lee Ann Womack ("He'll Be Back") and George Strait ("Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa"). Arrangements are pending. More on Lane here.
