Chronicle: Our condolences to the family, friends and fans of bluegrass legend Dr. Ralph Stanley, who died Thursday (6/23) at age 89 after a battle with skin cancer. Stanley was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2000 and received the National Medal of Arts at the White House in 2006. As half of The Stanley Brothers with brother Carter and their band the Clinch Mountain Boys, they toured folk and bluegrass festivals in the '60s and helped shape the bluegrass genre's evolving sound. Stanley was given an honorary doctorate of music from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN in 1976. A new generation of fans learned about Stanley because of the song "O Death," which he sang on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, and for which he won a Grammy in 2001 for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. Arrangements are pending.
