Compass Points South: With Entercom KMPS/Seattle's flip to Soft AC last week (CAT 12/4), the company has assigned the KSWD call letters to the station and moved the KMPS call letters to Sports KRAK-AM/Victor Valley. "The station was named after the original owner Manning P. Slater, and it was frustrating when people would call us KPMS," says former PD Becky Brenner. Former MD/afternoon host Tony Thomas adds, "In every week of my long run (22+ years), we'd hear from listeners who would refer to the station as 'Compass,' a handle the station used at launch and in the early part of its life and had long since retired before my arrival in 1989. That phrase and the call letters just stuck with generations of Puget Sound area listeners. Whether spoken or in a jingle sing, 94.1 and KMPS went together like Seattle and coffee."
