Mantel To Retire: Country Radio Hall of Famer and WRNS/Greenville, NC morning host Jim Mantel is retiring after seven years with the station and 36 years in radio. "There are some things my wife and I would like to do and the constraints of strange hours and limited time off prevent that," he says. "Our daughters are not close enough to spend as much time as we'd like with them and I have a Harley that doesn't have near enough miles on it." Mantel's career began at KNFM/Odessa, TX with later stops including KRYS/Corpus Christi, KKBQ/Houston and WGAR/Cleveland, where he was named CMA Personality of the Year in 1993. Mantel was inducted into the CRHoF last year (Breaking News 2/22/17). As for an official retirement date, "I've targeted the end of June," he says. "It's going to be a little scary. My wife and I have never shared a bathroom in the morning, so this could get messy!" The search is on for his replacement at WRNS. Airchecks and résumés here.
