Chronicle: Longtime Arizona broadcaster Ray Odom passed away today (2/16) at the age of 95. Odom worked at Phoenix stations KRIZ-AM and KRUX-AM in the early '50s before securing the license to his own station, KHEP-AM, which he launched in 1956 as the market's first exclusively Country station. KHEP-AM saw quick success and the following year Odom launched Country stations in El Paso (KHEY-AM) and Tucson (KMOP-AM). Odom sold KHEP-AM, which was daytime only, and in 1958 launched Phoenix's second (and first 24-hour) Country station, KHAT-AM. After selling his interest in KHAT-AM in 1968, Odom served as GM of Country KJJJ-AM. He has been inducted to the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame, the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame and the Greater Arizona Country Music Hall of Fame. No services are planned.
