Bell Media layoffs/sale
Cuts And Sales In Canada: In an open letter, Canadian telecom operator BCE Pres./CEO Mirko Bicic announced the company is cutting 9% of its workforce, or approximately 4,800 jobs. The Canadian Press reports that 10% of those jobs will be within the company's Bell Media TV and radio division and that 45 of its 103 radio stations will be sold to seven buyers. It quotes Bell Media Chief Legal/Regulatory Officer Robert Malcolmson as saying, "That’s a significant divestiture and it’s because it’s not a viable business anymore.”
Of the 45 stations being sold, seven are Country. Three will be sold to Vista: CJDC-AM/Dawson Creek, BC; CJFW/Terrace, BC and CICF/Vernon, BC. Maritime Broadcasting is acquiring CKTY/Truro, NB and CJCJ/Woodstock, NB. Durham Radio is purchasing CKQM/Peterborough, ON and My Broadcasting takes CKLC/Kingston, ON. No word on staff impact at the company's remaining Country outlets.
