CRS Panel Offers Emergency Preparedness Tips
Pressure Points: Panelists at today's (3/18) “On Air, Under Pressure: Dealing With Breaking News” session shared advice on how stations should deal with severe weather events and other emergencies, including ways to protect the mental health of the staff. News-Talk WWNC/Asheville, NC News Dir./Morning Host Mark Starling spoke about having to pivot during Hurricane Helene when cell towers went out. Frankfort, KY, Dir./Office of Emergency Management Ray Kinney advised stations, “Have a plan, but be ready to adapt.” And former KWJJ/Portland, OR morning co-host Kristen Flowers, who is also a counselor, urged broadcasters to “compartmentalize” when a crisis affects their community, separating their broadcaster side as “a conduit of information” from their parent/spouse side to avoid “spiraling.”
