Christmas Song Lawsuit Dismissed

Take Back The Holly & Mistletoe: A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit against Mariah Carey over her 1994 song "All I Want For Christmas Is You," ruling that Carey and co-writer Walter Afanasieff did not steal it from Andy Stone, who released a song with the same title in 1989 under the name Vince Vance and the Valiants. The $20 million lawsuit was filed by Stone and co-writer Troy Powers against Carey, Afanasieff and several music companies in 2023. Both songs have become holiday staples; the Vince Vance song was the second most-played Christmas song on Country radio last year, and the Carey song was the most played across all formats. Plantiffs were ordered to pay Carey's attorney fees. Read the judge's ruling here.
