Chronicle:
Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer Charlie Black passed away April 23. He was 71. Black moved to Nashville in 1970 immediately after graduating college to pursue a career as a singer before finding success as a writer. His first cut was Tommy Overstreet’s “Girl, You Came And Eased My Mind,” which led to a string of Top 10 hits for Overstreet. Black then teamed with Rory Bourke to collaborate on hits for Anne Murray, including the 1983 CMA Single of the Year “A Little Good News.” The duo also joined Kerry Chater for the Jennifer Warnes hit “I Know A Heartache When I See One,” teamed with Jerry Gillespie for The Bellamy Brothers’ “Do You Love As Good As You Look” and partnered with K.T. Oslin on her “Come Next Monday.” Black’s songwriting credits also include Reba McEntire’s “You Lie,” BlackHawk’s “Goodbye Says It All,” Collin Raye’s “Little Red Rodeo” and Phil Vassar’s “Carlene.” He was named SESAC Country Songwriter of the Year in 1979, ASCAP Country Songwriter of the Year in 1983 and 1984 and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1991. Arrangements are pending.
