Chronicle: Burns
Elizabeth-Murphy-Burns25.jpg Chronicle: Broadcast executive Elizabeth Murphy Burns passed April 24. She was 79. Burns was a third generation media executive. Her grandfather founded the Superior, WI Telegram in 1890, and she started selling classifieds at the age of 14. The company, renamed Morgan Murphy Media, expanded into broadcasting, and she became VP in 1982. Last month, she retired from her day-to-day duties as Pres./CEO overseeing more than a dozen TV stations and radio stations including Country outlets WHKB/Houghton, MI; WGLR/Lancaster, WI and KXLY/Spokane. Burns was the first woman elected to the board of the National Association of Broadcasters and was inducted into the Wisconsin Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2005.
