Chronicle: Former WGKX/Memphis morning co-host Brian Elder (Brian Groves), one-half of the almost two-decade morning show team of Young & Elder with Jay Young, passed June 17. He was 61. Elder left WGKX in 2010 (CAT 11/23/10), and more recently owned a Memphis-area roofing company. He ran for mayor of Arlington, TN in 2015. No word yet on services.
Veteran programmer/personality Ron Samuels passed away June 20. He was 76. Samuels started in radio in Minneapolis in 1965 and spent more than 15 years in R&B radio before his first foray into Country as OM at then-WKQS/Miami in 1982. Samuels later spent seven years on air at KILT/Houston, followed by time at KVST/Conroe, TX and KIXS/Victoria, TX. He retired from radio in 2019. Arrangements are pending.
