Chronicle: Longtime radio station owner/operator Wendell Mayes, Jr. passed Sunday (9/12) at the age of 97. Mayes spent his entire career in Texas where his family owned stations including KCWM/Fort Worth (now KPLX), which was the first FM Country station in the market in 1967. Mayes was named Pioneer Broadcaster of the Year by the Texas Association of Broadcasters (TAB) in 1978, was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2002 and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the TAB in 2017. He also served as Chairman for the American Diabetes Association and President of the International Diabetes Federation. Services will be Friday (9/17) at 11am CT at the Episcopal Church of The Good Shepherd (3201 Windsor Rd., Austin, TX).
