Post Milton: "The storm was horrific – no power bay-wide, trees down all over, but, thankfully no storm surge floods," Beasley/Tampa OM Rick Thomas tells Country Aircheck of the conditions following Hurricane Milton's landfall yesterday (10/9). "My house has some damage from falling trees, but many are worse off. [WQYK's] Kevin Ebel and JR Jaus are still on the air and doing an A+ job at what great radio delivers in times like these."
"Happy to report the WFUS staff is safe but, as anyone can tell from the media coverage, our area took quite the hit," says PD Ashley Morrison, who evacuated to Georgia. "The iHeart/Tampa brands will stay in wall-to-wall coverage until midnight tonight, as the thousands of people who evacuated will be trying to access their homes today and will be looking for updates. WFUS will return to regular on-air schedules tomorrow, however, our focus will remain on post-Milton local updates and resources."
"A lot of our people are without power and some have had local flooding into their homes," explains Cox WWKA/Orlando PD Steve Stewart. "The team did an amazing job broadcasting live at the station during the storm. We had close to 20 people providing live coverage across all five of our stations. Morning hosts Obie, Chloe and Slater were on air last night, overnight and this morning providing important information and peace of mind to our community. I couldn’t be more proud of the whole team, as we are calling them Camp 4192 (our address is 4192), and now we are focused on what relief efforts are needed."
"Everyone weathered the storm well," says Hall/Lakeland VP/Programming Bob Walker. "Several of our people rode it out at the station and made sure information flowed long after the power and cell service went out. This morning we decided to have three of our morning shows do one big talk show and simulcast it on WPCV, Adult Hits WWRZ and Talk WLKF-AM (pictured below). It was a great chance to hear stories from listeners of each station. Needless to say, we are all exhausted."
